FAQ

How are these made?

Renders are primarily created using Daz Studio, which is asset-based 3D software, with occasional use of Blender for importing and adjusting assets not optimized for Daz. Postwork painting and corrections, as well as surface map customizations, are done with Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom. Depending on complexity, background, and level of detail, each character can take anywhere between 8 and 20 hours from start to finish.

What does "asset-based" mean?

Unlike full modeling software like ZBrush and Blender that are primarily for sculpting, Daz Studio utilizes assets created by vendors and community members to create unique and diverse 3D models and imagery. Assets can be combined, shaped, distorted, remapped, and retextured to allow for full customization of renders.

Are characters pre-generated?

While pre-generated characters are available, every character I render is unique and individually designed. Because of its asset dependency, what you make in Daz can be limited by how many assets you have access to; my library currently stands at over 4,500 customizable assets, and I have the capacity to modify models all the way down to individual muscle groups so no two characters look the same.

What are the limitations?

Due to the nature of asset-based software, extremely specific designs can be difficult or impossible to make without them having to be sculpted from scratch. Additionally, customizations on a three-dimensional plane are much more complex than traditional art, requiring specific mapping on multiple axes and maps to get positioning and surfacing right. Because of this, some requests incur additional fees to reflect the work needed to achieve them, while others might be outside the scope of what I can create with my skillset and software.

PLANNING

Before work begins and the commission is accepted, I'll review your request to make sure I have all the information necessary to make something you'll be happy with. While extremely specific items and armor might not always be possible, I do like having extensive written details about your character, including physical description, personality, and backstory. Other great resources to have are art references, Pinterest boards, Hero Forge models, and anything else you feel paints a good picture of what you'd like to receive.

DRAFTING

The number of drafts sent will depend on both the complexity of the piece and the specific needs of the client, but all clients can expect at least three drafts before the final render is delivered for approval of face/body shape, pose, clothing & equipment, and scenery if applicable. Every draft will have your approval before further work is performed.

DELIVERY

After the final draft is approved and the second payment is received, the final render will be delivered either via email or a Dropbox link depending on the file size. The final image will be a minimum of 2000px on the longest side, and include a second copy with smaller dimensions for easier sharing and uploading as well as a closeup icon of the character's face for use in character sheets or tokens.
